Moldavite, A Creation Of Ancient Explosions.

Approximately 15 million years ago a giant meteorite (several cubic kilometers long) hurtled toward Europe, causing a tremendous explosion comparable to that of a multiple hydrogen bomb. The atmosphere was torn apart causing bits of melting earth and meteorite to fuse together. This melted mixture was thrown in random directions causing the creation of what we know today as Tektites, a natural glass that forms when terrestrial debris are ejected during extraterrestrial impacts. This amazing event caused the creation of Moldavite, a variety of Tektite much loved for it’s fabulous history.

Moldavite has recently exploded on the gemstone market, becoming hugely sought after as a specimen as well as a cut gemstone. This is probably due to its immense popularity among the metaphysical community, who view Moldavite as one of the most powerful gemstones out there. Stones are said to do everything from open all your chakras to protect you from dark spirits and even enhance psychic abilities. It is often used along with other gemstones for energy healing as it is said to amplify their powers. Meditating with Moldavite has been said to produce powerful visionary states and out of body experiences.

Due to its fast growing popularity, many fakes have been seen on the market so buyer beware! Things to look out for when buying Moldavite:

1.  Because of the explosive nature of it’s creation, Moldavite will usually display small bubble inclusions. If it’s completely clear and inexpensive, you’re probably getting a fake.

2. Moldavite is exclusively found in Czechoslovakia. It's definitely worth asking the seller where it's from.

3.  Moldavite has a very distinctive bottle-to-olive green colour. Familiarising yourself with the colour of Moldavite before you buy is a great idea. I have seen some really weird bright blue coloured stones being passed off as natural Moldavite.

Crystal healing, gemstones for the soul.

The mystical and healing properties of gemstones have been spoken about since ancient times. Whether you are a rock hound, jeweller or collector, you will have been exposed to this talk at some point in your gemstone gathering career.  If you are interested in this subject there is a plethora of information out there. Thousands of websites, books and even seminars are devoted to learning about the energetic/healing properties of gemstones.  However with the age of unyielding Science upon us, spirituality has taken a back seat and huge amounts of ridicule seems to be projected toward people who believe in the mystical properties of gems and crystals.

For as long as I can remember I have been a rock hound.  It started as a tiny crystal collection as a child and blossomed into an absolute fascination. I just couldn't believe how something so perfect could come out of the dirt and since studying gemmology I have found out just how wondrous these jewels truly are. I inevitably joined the gemstone industry and started meeting others who are as obsessed as I am. I have met all types on my trade show travels, from clean cut suits to amazing jewellery artists to full fledged crystal hippies. Among all the people that I've met, the metaphysical community have to be the most passionate about the stones they have. Compared to a lot of other industry types, these people seem to put real value into what they hold, seeing their stones as more than just another commodity.

Whether you are a believer or not there’s really no denying the power of the gemstone. The mathematical perfection of crystal lattice structures, the bright colours caused by the earths natural radiation combined with chemical impurities and the immense heat and pressure it can take to form these amazing beauties over thousands of years seem like magical facts in themselves. We have marvelled gemstones throughout the ages, holding them in the highest regard and giving them as symbols of love and power. They bring us comfort no matter what we believe in and I have a pretty strong feeling that they always will.
